At St Alphonsusโ Catholic Primary School we plan learning and teaching with a view to enabling each child to achieve their full potential and seek the highest level of personal achievement.ย ย
Our Design and Technology Vision
At St. Alphonsusโ, we want to inspire pupils and develop their confidence to experiment and invent their own works of art.ย Our curriculum has been designed to give pupils every opportunity to develop their ability and express their ideas and thoughts.
Our Design and Technology Intent – Why do we teach reading the way we do, and how does it meet the needs of our pupils?
High Five
- Pupils have a knowledge of important designers that are relevant to them, and link to the world around them.ย
- Pupils are supported to make their own creative choices and decisions.
- Pupils will be challenged in lessons to be resilient designers and to the possibilities of Design and Technology.ย
- Through engaging and creative lessons, pupils know and understand subject-specific language.
- Pupils will leave school equipped with techniques, confidence and creativity to form a strong foundation of Design and Technology learning at KS3 and beyond.
Implementation of our Design and Technology Curriculum – What do we teach? What does it look like?
The CUSP Design and Technology curriculum is organised into blocks with each block covering a particular set of artistic disciplines, including food and nutrition, mechanisms, structures, systems, electrical systems, understanding materials and textiles. In addition to core knowledge, each module will focus on developing different aspects of design development.
What Design and Technology looks like EYFS:
- Pupils experience many aspects of Design and Technology through independent exploration of the variety of tools and materials provided.ย Pupils are supported in their exploration through timely adult intervention in order for the pupils to make progress.
What Design and Technology looks like Y1-Y6:
- Pupils are given details of the skills, knowledge and key vocabulary at the beginning of each block. Pupils can refer back to this knowledge in their sketch book as required.ย A prescribed sequence of lessons are followed in each year group.ย Teachers are able to understand pupils’ development based on both the core knowledge and design aspects specified in each block.
Impact of our Design and Technology Curriculum – What will be the outcomes we hope to achieve as a result of our curriculum?
Pupils will leave school equipped with the techniques, confidence and creativity to form a strong foundation of Design and Technology learning at KS3 and beyond.
