At St Alphonsus’ Catholic Primary School we plan learning and teaching with a view to enabling each child to achieve their full potential and seek the highest level of personal achievement.
Our PSHE Vision
At St. Alphonsus’, we want all children to be prepared spiritually, morally, culturally, mentally and physically for the opportunities, responsibilities and experiences for later life. Our Relationships and Sex Education enables our children to learn how to be safe, and to understand and develop healthy relationships, both now and in their future lives.
Our PSHE Intent – Why do we teach reading the way we do, and how does it meet the needs of our pupils?
High Five
- Our intention is that when children leave St Alphonsus’, they will do so with the knowledge, understanding and emotions to be able to play an active, positive and successful role in today’s diverse society.
- We want our children to have high aspirations, have a belief in themselves and realise that anything is possible if they put their mind to it through hard work.
- We want our children to develop the acquisition of knowledge and skills which will enable children to access the wider curriculum and prepare them to be a global citizen now and in their future roles within a global community.
- We want our pupils to have a wide vocabulary which will enable them to be better able to speak out regarding their own safety.
- We want our children to have high aspirations, a belief in themselves and realise that anything is possible if they put their mind to it through hard work.
We understand that a secure understanding of primary PSHE skills are fundamental to future academic success. We place a high priority on securing emotional well-being, so pupils are able to secure success in their academic learning. Many of our pupils have low starting points but this drive in ensuring all children acquire the knowledge and skills to deal with their emotions will aid their development in their future lives.
A culture of building resilience within our school is embraced within all lessons as children are encouraged to discuss errors, in order to recognise when they are successful and learn from their mistakes.
Implementation of our PSHE Curriculum – What do we teach? What does it look like?
To support teaching and learning of PSHE in our school, we follow the schemes of learning from Jigsaw and Ten Ten. We chose Ten Ten as it covers all aspects of PSHE teaching whilst
linking closely with our Religious Education programme of learning through the areas of ‘created and loved by God,’ ‘created to love others’ and ‘created to live in the community.’
What PSHE looks like within St Alphonsus’ School:
In EYFS we cover the following topics through whole class discussions;
- religious understanding
- me, my body and my health
- emotional well-being
- life cycles
- personal relationships
- keeping safe
- living in the wider world
Impact of our PSHE – What will be the outcomes we hope to achieve as a result of our PSHE curriculum?
Pupils will leave St Alphonsus’ displaying the qualities of our High Five curriculum intentions. This will be regularly and consistently monitored through:
- high expectations of caring for themselves and the world around them
- their daily engagement with religious ideas as they integrate them in their daily lives
