Our PE Vision
At St. Alphonsus’, physical education, physical activity and school sport are at the heart of everything we do. We want all pupils to thrive and succeed in a range of physical activities and lead healthy lifestyles.
Our PE Intent – Why do we teach PE the way we do, and how does it meet the needs of our pupils?

Sport, health and fitness are at the centre of life at St Alphonsus. Our fantastic outdoor areas immediately provide the tools for our pupils to thrive and succeed in many kinds of physical activity.
We are immensely proud of all of our sporting achievements and our children flourish in an active environment where they are each personally challenged to be ambassadors for sport and fitness in the original NPCAT School of the Year.
Our committed staff make sport and PE fully inclusive at St Alphonsus, and our children participate in a wide-range of activities and competitions to develop their physical abilities, sportsmanship, teamwork and leadership skills from Nursery to Y6. We engage with
local coaches and clubs to ensure that our children have every opportunity to develop a life-long love for sport and physical fitness.
Whether it’s at an after school sports club, leading playground games or participating in a PE lesson, we pride ourselves on making sport and fitness fun, purposeful and accessible for all.
Implementation of our PE Curriculum – What do we teach? What does it look like?
- EYFS – physical activity is vital in children’s all-round development, enabling them to pursue happy, healthy and active lives. By creating games and providing opportunities for play both indoors and outdoors, adults can support children to develop their core strength, stability, balance, spatial awareness, co-ordination and agility. Gross motor skills provide the foundation for developing healthy bodies and social and emotional wellbeing. Fine motor control and precision helps with hand-eye co-ordination which is later linked to early literacy. Repeated and varied opportunities to explore and play with small world activities, puzzles, arts and crafts and the practice of using small tools, with feedback and support from adults, allow children to develop proficiency, control and confidence.
- KS1 – pupils are taught 2, one hour long PE sessions a week teaching a variety of invasion games, dance or gymnastics. Children build on the fundamental skills taught in EYFS and aim to master basic skill movements such as running, throwing, jumping and catching as well as beginning to develop balance, agility and coordination. Children are introduced to team games as well as individual sports. Basic tactics are introduced to the children as well as competitive sports whether that be competing against other children, teams or themselves.
- KS2 – pupils also taught two, one-hour long PE sessions a week teaching a variety of invasion games, dance, gymnastics, swimming (Y5&6) or outdoor adventurous activities. Children will learn how to apply all skills taught throughout their school journey in a variety of ways. They develop an understanding of how to improve, evaluate themselves and others and recognise their own success. There is a bigger focus in both competition against themselves or other children.
- PE Passport gives us a full curriculum, based on NC objectives, that allows staff to effectively teach enjoyable, active and high-quality lessons. It also allows us to monitor, track and assess their pupils’ PE learning.
- Adapted so it is fully inclusive.
Impact of our PE Curriculum – What will be the outcomes we hope to achieve as a result of our PE curriculum?
Pupils will leave St Alphonsus’ displaying the qualities of our High Five curriculum intentions.
This will be regularly and consistently monitored through:
- Confident and aspirational pupils.
- Pupils display the Active Alphonsus Values.
- Application of PE skills e.g. games, competitive sport, playground games.
- Feedback and assessment for learning through PE Passport.
- Retrieval learning and checking understanding in each lesson.
- Termly summative assessments through PE Passport based on teacher assessment.
- Termly pupil progress meetings to monitor progress, analyse data and create learning action plans identifying underperforming groups and what support can be provided.
