At St Alphonsus’ Catholic Primary School we plan learning and teaching with a view to enabling each child to achieve their full potential and seek the highest level of personal achievement.

Our Art and Design Vision

At St. Alphonsus’, we want to inspire pupils and develop their confidence to experiment and invent their own works of art.  Our curriculum has been designed to give pupils every opportunity to develop their ability and express their ideas and thoughts.

Our Art and Design Intent – Why do we teach Art and Design the way we do, and how does it meet the needs of our pupils?

High Five

  1. Pupils have a knowledge of important artists that are relevant to them, and link to the world around them.
  2. Pupils are supported to make their own creative choices and decisions.
  3. Pupils will be challenged in lessons to be resilient artists and to the possibilities of art and design.
  4. Through engaging and creative lessons, pupils know and understand subject-specific language.
  5. Pupils will leave school equipped with techniques, confidence and creativity to form a strong foundation of Art and Design learning at KS3 and beyond.

Implementation of our Art and Design Curriculum – What do we teach? What does it look like?

The CUSP Art curriculum is organised into blocks with each block covering a particular set of artistic disciplines, including drawing, painting, printmaking, textiles, 3D and collage.

In addition to core knowledge, each module will focus on developing different aspects of artistic development.

What Art and Design looks like EYFS:

  • Pupils experience many aspects of art and design through independent exploration of the variety of tools and materials provided.  Pupils are supported in their exploration through timely adult intervention in order for the pupils to make progress.

What Art and Design looks like Y1-Y6:

  • Pupils are given details of the skills, knowledge and key vocabulary at the beginning of each block. Pupils can refer back to this knowledge in their sketch book as required.  A prescribed sequence of lessons are followed in each year group.  Teachers are able to understand pupils’ development based on both the core knowledge and artistic aspects specified in each block.

Impact of our Art and Design Curriculum – What will be the outcomes we hope to achieve as a result of our curriculum?

Pupils will leave school equipped with the techniques, confidence and creativity to form a strong foundation of Art and Design learning at KS3 and beyond.

Year 6,
I don’t think I’ll ever find the words to say how proud of you I am. Your hard work, resilience, and positive attitude is something to be immensely proud of.
From teaching you all in Y2 and dancing our way through the year, to supporting you all through SATs and seeing you achieve your goals.
I will always be proud to say I have taught you and you are part of the Green A Team💚
Good luck in the future- you’re going to be amazing!✨
Big love!
Miss Rowland💚
